Every technical academic project begins with understanding the clientβs challenge, the assessment expectations, and the practical work required to create a complete submission.

After the initial discussion and a short voice call, the client shared the case materials. These included the Excel dataset βLSS Case 27.xlsxβ and the supporting case document βLSS Case 27.pdfβ. From this point, the project was developed as one integrated technical-and-academic workflow rather than as separate pieces of analysis and writing.

Understanding the Clientβs Requirements
The assignment concerned XYZ Manufacturing Ltd., a training-football manufacturer operating a multi-stage production process involving material selection, panel cutting, stitching, bladder insertion, assembly, inspection, and quality control.
The core quality problem was product durability. The project materials repeatedly identify an average football lifespan of approximately 300 days against a desired requirement of 360 days. The gap was associated with recurring failures, replacement costs, customer dissatisfaction, and pressure on profitability and competitiveness.
The process was not simply producing a small number of unusual failures. The supplied analysis indicates that lifespan measurements were tightly clustered around a mean that was consistently below the required standard. This suggested a systematic performance problem: the manufacturing process appeared relatively stable, but stable at the wrong level.

Step 1: Structuring the Work Around DMAIC
The project was organised around the five connected stages of Six Sigma DMAIC: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. This created a clear relationship between the business problem, the statistical analysis, the proposed solutions, and the long-term control strategy.

Step 2: DEFINE – Establishing the Problem and Scope
The Define phase established why the durability problem mattered, what parts of the manufacturing process were included, and what improvement outcome was expected. The business case linked poor product lifespan to replacement costs, customer dissatisfaction, and profitability. The project scope covered material selection, panel assembly, bladder insertion, manufacturing operations, and quality control, while external supply-chain factors were kept outside the defined scope.

Progress Updates and First-Draft Follow-Up
Keeping the Client Involved Throughout the Project
Client communication remained important throughout the assignment. Amitava did not simply submit the brief and wait for the final delivery. The communication record shows follow-up messages, requests for progress updates, and concern about the timing of the first draft because his institute was actively following up.
At one point, the client wrote that he had βfull faithβ in the team but requested to be kept updated. A subsequent message noted that the institute was following up for the first draft. These exchanges show why communication and milestone visibility were important parts of the service.

Draft Development and Minitab File Sharing
The clearest technical evidence appears during the draft-sharing stage. The communication explains that the written work had been developed up to Slide 14 in the PPT template, while the remaining analysis outputs and interpretation still needed to be incorporated.
Three files were then shared with the client: βAmitav.docxβ, βMinitab.mpxβ, and βDEFINE.docxβ. The presence of the Minitab project file directly connects the statistical software work with the academic project, while the DEFINE document demonstrates the structured use of the DMAIC methodology.
